The Wizard of Oz has one of the wildest and most infamous productions of any movie ever filmed. Did you know that half of the cast was either injured or nearly died during production, and one potential cast member did — before she was signed onto the film? Here are just 23 of the many, many weird little-known and well-known facts about everything that went wrong to give us a movie that was so right. According to studio publicity, Dorothy Gulch was twelve-years-old, four years younger than the actress who played her, Judy Garland, even though author L. Frank Baum never gave her an actual age. In an earlier adaptation of the film, Dorothy rang in her 18th birthday, just old enough to smoke, and the character would later be played by the year-old Diana Ross and the year-old Fairuza Balk.

Frank Baumthe writer of the amazing Wizard of Oz books is years old on the 15 th May! Of course sadly, this means he is not with us today. But his wonderful words and wisdom still lives on. Everyone from their childhood or their adulthood will remember reading a book from the Oz series or at least seeing the Wizard of Oz films.
Maybe you read all 14 of the full-length books in the series! You then know that they were filled with magic, delight, humour and most importantly inspiring life lessons. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty. There is no place like home.
